Practical guide

How to check and remove PDF metadata safely

PDF files can store titles, author names, software details and dates that are not visible on the page itself.

Published and reviewed

Start with inspection

Use View PDF Metadata to review common document information fields before editing anything. Record any values that must remain for business or archival purposes.

Create a separate sharing copy

Never rely on the only copy of a document. Remove common metadata from a duplicate, then inspect the result again.

The FileSwift remover clears several standard fields, but PDF files can also contain XMP packets, attachments, annotations, scripts, hidden layers and visible information that requires a broader privacy review.

Metadata is only one privacy layer

A file name, visible signature, comment, revision mark or embedded attachment can disclose more than the standard author field. Review the complete document and use an appropriate professional redaction workflow for sensitive material.

Verification

Open the cleaned file in more than one viewer, re-run metadata inspection and confirm that the pages still display correctly before distribution.
